Lie 6: My Opinions Should Become Your Truth

There’s no room for any kind of disagreement. They can be obnoxiously closed-minded. They can be stubbornly forceful in trying to make you think the same way they do. So when you come along and say, “Well, I think differently,” or “My opinion takes into account these things that you didn’t take into account,” rather than them thinking, “Oh, I guess I can learn from you,” it’s, “No, no, no, no.” They shut you down and try to force-feed their opinions upon you.

Lie 7: Your Independence Equals Rebellion or Rejection

They think of themselves as being the ultimate keepers of truth when, in fact, they’re keepers of the rules which they get to write and edit as they want to. They operate on the notion that says, “Freedom for me, but subjugation for you.” They don’t like themselves being free but don’t want you to be free. This is especially true when they’re in power positions whether it’s parenting, or they think of themselves as being the head of the household, or in work settings or organizations. Whenever you have somebody in a power position, this double standard of “freedom for me and subjugation for you” comes out very strongly. They need you to fall in line and fall in line quickly.
