Today, I want to highlight 10 of the most common lies that narcissists have to hold on to, and these lies become defining features of who they are. It’s kind of sad—well, not kind of sad, it’s very sad that you have to build your life upon deception, but that’s part of the narcissistic pattern. So, let’s get to it.
Lie 1: I Deserve Favored Treatment
Narcissists are known for having raw selfishness. Every one of us can have some of that at times, but our raw selfishness is pervasive to the extent that it creates an attitude of entitlement. So, they say, “I deserve favored treatment,” and that means they’re going to have an ever-present agenda toward you. They’re going to make many demands about how you’re supposed to treat them, and they’re going to have chronic frustration about your lack of compliance.

Lie 2: My Expectations Are Realistic
They’ve concluded, “Well, because I’m so special and because I deserve favored treatment, I’m the best, and you owe it to me to give me your deference.” As a result, they can’t be pleased, and they’re constantly in a mindset of justification and rationalization about why they’re right and you’re wrong. In doing so, it overshadows their weak self-image. It’s like, “No, I’m realistic. You’re not. You just don’t understand life like I do.” My thinking is that’s accurate but not the way they mean it.
